Audience This
activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians involved
in the care of patients with HIV
Program
Overview There
are currently more than 1.2 million people living with the human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV) in the United States, with more than 40,000 new infections annually.
The understanding and management of HIV disease is constantly evolving. HIV researchers
and providers attend or monitor scientific conferences to improve their understanding
and refine their treatment strategies for HIV diagnosis and management. Similar
to practices in other therapeutic areas, whenever possible, clinical findings,
research, and understanding of HIV disease are immediately applied to clinical
practice. The
HIV Knowledge Network Study Group will synthesize the key clinical data presented
at the XVII International AIDS Conference, held in Mexico City, August 3-8, 2008,
and provide expert commentary on their clinical significance.
Educational
Objectives Upon
completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Explain how newly presented study results in antiretroviral therapy apply to clinical
practice
Review significant developments
and strategies in antiretroviral therapy as they relate to treating naïve
patients, patients in second-line and later regimens, and multiclass-experienced
patients
Describe recent antiretroviral
complications, including their potential impact on treatment strategies and HIV
management
