Gilead Sciences this week announced the start of a new Phase 2 clinical trial that will compare an all-in-1 combination pill containing GS-7340 -- a pro-drug of tenofovir (Viread, also in the Truvada and Atripla coformulations) that can be taken in lower doses -- versus the experimental Quad combo containing the same drugs with tenofovir itself.

At the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory hearing on Thursday, February 9, a panel of scientists and clinicians voted unanimously not to recommend approval of the Qutenza capsaicin patch for HIV neuropathy pain, based on data from 2 clinical trials. The long-awaited START (Strategic Timing of Antiretroviral Treatment) trial is now recruiting participants in an effort to determine the best time to initiate antiretroviral therapy (ART), an issue that remains controversial. In this international Phase IV trial, asymptomatic HIV positive adults with CD4 T-cell counts above 500 cells/mm3 -- the threshold for starting therapy in the current U.S. treatment guidelines -- will be randomly assigned to either begin ART immediately or wait until their CD4 count falls to 350 cells/mm3.
