Various anabolic steroids have also been used for the treatment of HIV-associated wasting. Nandrolone, also called Deca Durabolin®, is an injectable steroid which has been studied in a 16-week, open-label trial at a dose of 100 mg every two weeks.1
Participants who had lost 5% to 15% of their body weight demonstrated a mean weight gain of 2.24 kg. They also experienced an increase in lean body mass of 3 kg, as well as an improvement in quality of life.
Three other studies, including one in women, also demonstrated increases in average weight gain and lean body mass.2-4 The use of nandrolone in women may produce virulizing symptoms, such as hoarseness, hirsuitism, and clitoral enlargement, although these remain rare.
