The European
AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) has released new, revised guidelines for the treatment
of HIV monoinfection in adults and HIV
coinfection with hepatitis B and hepatitis
C.
Last
updated in 2003, the new recommendations were presented October 26, 2007 at the
11th annual EACS conference in Madrid, Spain (October 24-27, 2007).
Overall,
the new guidelines reflect a more aggressive approach to initiation of treatment
for HIV monoinfection, management of HIV-related
metabolic complications, and treatment of HIV-HCV
and HIV-HBV
coinfection.
The
guidelines state that HIV viral load suppression below 50 copies/mL should be
the goal of antiretroviral therapy for both treatment-experienced and treatment-naive
individuals. Treatment is recommended for patients with fewer than 350 cells/mm3,
bringing the European guidelines more in accord with U.S.
HIV treatment guidelines.
