New 600 mg Darunavir (Prezista) Formulation Allows for Fewer Pills per Dose

On February 25, 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced approval of a new 600 mg tablet of darunavir (Prezista), Tibotec's protease inhibitor. Tibotec said the new 600 mg tablet will become available mid-May 2008.

The recommended oral dose of darunavir is 600 mg twice daily taken with ritonavir 100 mg twice daily and with food.
The new 600 mg tablet will reduce pill burden by enabling patients to take 1 600 mg tablet at a time rather than 2 of the old 300 mg tablets.

The 600 mg formulation will be available in bottles of 60 tablets, and is expected to be in pharmacies by May. The 300 mg tablet will continue to be sold.
