International
AIDS Conference Begins Sunday in Mexico City
The
XVII International AIDS Conference (IAC 2008) will take place next week, August
3-8, at Centro Banamex in Mexico City -- the first time the conference is being
held in Latin America. As the oldest and largest conference addressing HIV/AIDS,
IAC 2008 -- with the theme "Universal Action Now" -- will feature sessions
on a wide range of aspects of the global epidemic.
This
International AIDS Conference is convened every other summer by the International
AIDS Society (IAS), with the IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and
Prevention taking place in alternate years. Although the IAC is more focused on
social, cultural, economic, and policy issues related to the epidemic, the meeting
will feature numerous sessions each day devoted to biomedical prevention technologies,
advances in antiretroviral therapy, and management of side effects and associated
conditions. Upwards
of 25,000 people are expected to participate in the conference. World leaders
scheduled to attend include Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa, United
Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and former U.S. President Bill Clinton.
HIV
and Hepatitis.com will report on the most interesting epidemiology, prevention,
and treatment presentations beginning on August 5 and continuing for the next
several issues. In addition, we will also feature a selection of coverage from
the Kaiser Family Foundation, as well as daily CME expert podcasts discussing
highlights from the medical presentations. Further
information, including the full conference program and abstracts (viewable starting
at the time of presentation), is available at www.aids2008.org. 8/01/08 Source XVII
