October 15 Is Latino AIDS Awareness Day

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), the Latino Commission on AIDS (LCOA), the Hispanic Federation, and other organizations have designated October 15 as Latino AIDS Awareness Day, in an effort to bring more attention to this heavily affected population.

While Latino/Hispanic people represent only 15% of the total U.S. population, they account for about 18% of new HIV infections. According to updated HIV incidence figures released last year, the estimated incidence rate for Latinos in 2006 (the latest year with full data) was 29.3 per 100,000 persons -- well below the rate of 83.7 per 100,000 persons among African-Americans, but more than twice the rate of 11.5 per 100,000 persons among whites. Latina women are about 4 times more likely to become infected than white women.

For further information about HIV among Latinos, as well as links to resources in English and Spanish, visit the DHHS Latino AIDS Awareness Day web site at www.hhs.gov.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides a fact sheet on HIV/AIDS among Hispanics/Latinos, available at (English) or (Spanish).
