While
Latino/Hispanic people represent only 15% of the total U.S.
population, they account for about 18% of new HIV infections.
According to updated
HIV incidence figures released last year, the estimated
incidence rate for Latinos in 2006 (the latest year with
full data) was 29.3 per 100,000 persons -- well below the
rate of 83.7 per 100,000 persons among African-Americans,
but more than twice the rate of 11.5 per 100,000 persons
among whites. Latina women are about 4 times more likely
to become infected than white women.
