The American Diabetes Association has established criteria for diagnosing
diabetes in adults.1 Such criteria do not apply to women with gestational
diabetes.
One or more criteria must be present. These include a fasting
plasma glucose level equal to or greater than 126 mg/dL on at least
two separate occasions.
A second criterion is a random plasma glucose level equal to
or greater than 200 mg/dL accompanied by signs and symptoms of diabetes.
The other criterion is a 2-hour glucose level equal to or greater
than 200 mg/dL following a 75 gm oral glucose-tolerance test.
