Glucose: Diagnostic Criteria for Diabetes

One or more must be present:
- Fasting plasma glucose level >126 mg/dL on at least 2 separate occasions
- Random plasma glucose level >200 mg/dL with signs and symptoms of diabetes
- A 2-hour glucose level of >200 mg/dL following a 75 gm oral glucose tolerance test

• The American Diabetes Association has established criteria for diagnosing diabetes in adults.1 Such criteria do not apply to women with gestational diabetes.

• One or more criteria must be present. These include a fasting plasma glucose level equal to or greater than 126 mg/dL on at least two separate occasions.

• A second criterion is a random plasma glucose level equal to or greater than 200 mg/dL accompanied by signs and symptoms of diabetes.

• The other criterion is a 2-hour glucose level equal to or greater than 200 mg/dL following a 75 gm oral glucose-tolerance test.
