Patients may also develop hyperlactatemia as a complication of antiretroviral
therapy.
The syndrome is defined as an increased blood lactate in
the wake of a normal pH. Usually, there is also a normal bicarbonate.
The mortality is high with this syndrome, exceeding 75%.
