Hyperlactatemia: Defining the Syndrome

Increased blood lactate with normal pH
Usually normal HCO3
May be symptomatic or asymptomatic
- Significance of asymptomatic hyperlactatemia unknown
- Symptomatic hyperlactatemia associated with non-specific GI complaints and/or abnormal LFTs
 

• Patients may also develop hyperlactatemia as a complication of antiretroviral therapy.

• The syndrome is defined as an increased blood lactate in the wake of a normal pH. Usually, there is also a normal bicarbonate.

• The mortality is high with this syndrome, exceeding 75%.
