Lonergan and colleagues have been studying symptomatic hyperlactatemia
in a case series of adults receiving NRTIs.1 They are defined as having
an increased lactate level associated with gastrointestinal symptoms
and/or unexplained ALT levels.
After identifying these cases, the researchers looked at their
therapy as well as the relative risk of developing symptomatic hyperlactatemia
compared to patients who were on zidovudine and 3TC.
A total of 33 out of 1,611 patients met the case definition
between 1998 and 2000.
The overall incidence rate for any NRTI regimen was 14.5 cases
per 1000 person-years.
