Switching
d4T for ZDV or ABC in Patientswith
Fat Wasting Effect on Lactate

These are results from a study by Saint-Marc and colleagues who examined
the effect of stopping d4T in order to reverse peripheral fat wasting.1
As part of the study, lactate levels were measured.
In patients who were either PI-naïve or PI-experienced,
there was a decrease in blood lactate levels over a period of time
after d4T was discontinued.
It should be noted that these were asymptomatic lactate levels.
This particular study was looking at what happens in relationship
to increased lactate after d4T is stopped.
Nevertheless, this data seem to suggest that there may be an
increased prevalence of lactate when d4T-containing regimens are used.
