USCA 2014: U.S. Conference on AIDS Underway in San Diego

alt

The 18th annual U.S. Conference on AIDS, sponsored by the National Minority AIDS Council, is taking place this week in San Diego. While other conferences focus on new data about antiretroviral therapy and biomedical prevention, USCA emphasizes the social, economic, and cultural aspects of HIV/AIDS.

USCA focuses on strengthening the community-based response to HIV/AIDS through education, training, collaboration, and networking. The conference brings together people working on all aspects of the HIV/AIDS response, including medical providers, case managers, public health workers, policy-makers, and advocates, along with a strong representation of people living with HIV.

Some of the topics highlighted at this year's meeting include implementation of the Affordable Care Act for people with HIV, expanding awareness of and access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), improving the continuum of care, and integrating viral hepatitis into HIV efforts. Numerous sessions will focus on key affected populations including youth, older people, women, gay and bisexual men, transgender people, and people of color -- especially African-Americans -- who bear a disproportionate burden in the epidemic.

AIDS.gov has prepared a preview of federal government participation in the conference and will be providing continuous updates during the meeting via Twitter (@AIDSgov) and conference highlights at http://blog.AIDS.gov.
