Glucose: Insulin Resistance

Medications have direct effect
Fat distribution is affected:
- Association between truncal obesity and insulin resistance
- Syndrome X
- Type II diabetes
Primary problem is insulin resistance

• The pathogenesis behind these glucose abnormalities is not well understood. It is clear, however, that various antiretroviral medications, particularly the protease inhibitors, have a direct effect on the development of insulin resistance in these patients.

• Along with this insulin resistance is an effect on fat distribution. There has always been a well-known association between truncal obesity and insulin resistance, which combine to produce the characteristic Syndrome X and Type II, adult-onset diabetes.

• Although various glucose abnormalities are observed in patients with HIV infection, the main problem appears to be insulin resistance.
