In conclusion, it is common to find abnormalities in glucose
metabolism in patients receiving HAART. Although various conditions
have been documented, the one most commonly observed is insulin resistance.
It also appears that patients receiving protease inhibitors
have a higher incidence of these disorders.
The mechanisms behind these abnormalities remain unclear at
this time. Various drugs, central adiposity, and triglyceride levels
seem to play some role.
The treatment for HIV-infected patients with these conditions
is the same as for non-HIV-infected patients. Various therapeutic
agents, including insulin-sensitizing agents, may be beneficial when
used alone or in combination.
Additional research is needed to understand these syndromes
more thoroughly in patients with HIV infection.
