Charles Rice from the Rockefeller University traced the development of scientific knowledge about hepatitis C virus and the evolution of its treatment in a plenary lecture at the 2015 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) taking place this week in Seattle.
Rice gave a preview of his Bernard Fields Lectureat a CROI press conference preceding his talk.
The advent of effective interferon-free treatment for hepatitis C "represents a very significant, almost revolutionary medical advance," he said. But challenges still remain, including "identifying those infected, effective implementation, and figuring out how to pay for it."
