New Report Outlines Persistent Health Disparities in U.S.

Health disparities based on race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status remain a persistent problem in the U.S. despite efforts to combat them, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published in the January 14, 2011, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report supplement. Infant mortality remains higher among African-Americans, poor people spend more days sick than those with higher incomes, and disparities in HIV infection rates are widening, with blacks and gay/bisexual men bearing the greatest burden.
Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP) to End, but Networks Will Continue

On October 27, the Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Project (CHAMP) announced that its board and staff had decided to end the agency's operations. CHAMP, founded by long-time AIDS activist Julie Davids in 2003, aimed to unite HIV positive people, community activists, policy-makers, and researchers in effort to attack the root causes of the epidemic such as poverty, homophobia, and racism. Two networks spearheaded by CHAMP -- the HIV Prevention Justice Alliance and Project UNSHACKLE -- will continue their work under new auspices.
IAPAC Survey Finds Gaps in Patient-Physician Conversations Affect Treatment Outcomes

New results from a survey of more than 2000 people with HIV/AIDS around the world has shown that HIV patients and their healthcare providers may not communicate effectively, which can adversely influence disease progression, treatment outcomes, management of side effects, and quality of life. The International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC) released the survey findings this week to coincide with the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna.
CDC Awards $6.2 Million for Integration of HIV, Hepatitis, STD, and Tuberculosis Services

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced last week that it will award more than $6 million to fund demonstration projects to facilitate integration and collaboration among providers of prevention and care services for HIV, viral hepatitis, other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis. CDC will monitor and evaluate the projects to identify innovative approaches that can serve as models for other health departments.
ViiV Healthcare Extends Generic HIV Drug Licensing to More Low-income Countries

ViiV Healthcare, the HIV specialty pharmaceutical company formed by GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer, announced last week that it will allow expanded access to all the company's current and future antiretroviral medications for people in all least-developed and low-income countries, including all of sub-Saharan Africa. The new policy will extend royalty-free voluntary licensing -- in which a patent holder permits another company to make generic versions of its products -- will encompass 69 countries, representing 80% of all people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide.
